Aeration punches holes in the greens to relieve compaction. Necessary work, but putting surfaces stay bumpy for one to three weeks afterwards.
Most courses aerate in spring and again in late summer or early autumn. Warm-season grass usually goes in the heat; cool-season grass in the shoulder months.
